Needing Nothing Makes Intimacy Impossible. People Pleasing from the Opposite Lens
365 Days of Regulation Day 169
Here is what your friends, partners, coworkers, children, or really anyone on the receiving end of your people pleasing would like you to know. I am not talking about the manipulators who use your people pleasing for the benefit, I am talking about the people who actually care about the you underneath the sacrificial robes
When you pretend to be unbothered by something I am doing, but then eventually distance yourself, get cold, or blow up because of hidden resentment, it affects my trust in you. I know it is hard to say what you feel in the moment. I know it can feel scary, selfish, dramatic, or like you are creating a problem where there wasn’t one before.
But I would rather know. I would rather you tell me, “Actually, I don’t want to do that,” than find out three months later that you hated it the whole time and were silently adding it to a resentment spreadsheet I didn’t even know existed.
Because then I am not just dealing with the original issue. Now I am dealing with the fact that I thought we were okay, and we weren’t.
In our relationship, I don’t want you to do things you do not want to do just to keep me comfortable. I don’t want a yes that costs you or an agreement that turns into bitterness later. I don’t want to think we made a decision together, only to find out you were performing cooperation while quietly feeling invisible.
That is humiliating for me too, because now I have to look back and wonder how many moments were real. How many dinners, trips, plans, conversations, favors, and “no worries” were actually loaded with resentment that you never gave me a chance to respond to.
I know you always say you are “down for whatever,” and sometimes that sounds easygoing, but after a while, it puts all the responsibility on me. I have to pick the place. I have to decide the plan. I have to read your face. I have to guess whether you actually mean yes or whether this is one of those yeses that comes with a bill later.
And I do not want to be in a relationship where I have to become a detective just to figure out what you really feel. Sometimes I want you to decide. Sometimes I want you to speak up. And ,sometimes I want you to lead the way, not because I do not care, but because I want to know you are here too.
I want to be connected to someone who feels like an equal, and it is really hard to feel like we are equals if you never share your needs, never take up space, never ask for anything, and never let me adjust to the real you.
By always putting me first, you create a power dynamic I never asked for. You may think you are being loving by needing nothing, but needing nothing makes intimacy impossible. Because connection requires truth and not just your polished truth or your convenient truth. Not just the version of you that is easy to be around.
The real one. The one who has preferences. Limits. Opinions. Irritations. Needs. Desires. Things that matter. Please tell me what you need, because if I cannot meet your needs, we both deserve to know that.
People pleasing makes you believe that having needs is what threatens connection, but most of the time, it is the hiding that does the damage. The right people do not need you to disappear so they can love you.
They need you to show up honestly, so the relationship has a chance to be real.
This is part of 365 Days of Regulation — a year-long exploration of how emotional dysregulation actually shows up in everyday life. Not in theory. Not in self-help slogans. But in emails, meetings, relationships, leadership, and the quiet moments where we ask, why did I react like that?
Your reactions aren’t random.
And they aren’t a moral failure.
This series exists so you can see the pattern and stop being run by it.
No fixing.
No bypassing.
Just awareness, one day at a time.

Really loved this. This series is so great! I don’t know how you KEEP putting out this bangers. I am absolutely all in for this ❤️
Thank you you for the kind words..:)
I love what I do, so it makes it kind of easy to keep coming up with articles. And the fact that they are resonating with people, well, now that is a type of high, that I am absolutely here for..:)
